Ode to Lady Death

I hope to die of natural cause,
But even if it’s not to be,
Then when the reaper comes for me,
I hope my life shall give her pause.
For though I paid her little mind,
Passing through but day-to-day,
It never was from disrespect.
Rather, I knew not what to say;
Words were always hard to find
To comfort her who’s called unkind
By those whose souls are lie-bedeck’d.

Her fickle sister I would court
Whenever fate seemed in my way,
But she, alas, would never stay
Past when the dice made their report.
You were always by my side,
Warning me against regret,
Pushing me beyond the ranks
Of fools who owe a petty debt
To she who cares not for their pride.
From you, dear lady, I’ll never hide,
But offer you my solemn thanks.

Memento mori, death my dear;
I’ve always known and never feared.
I knew my time would come one day,
Yet never wished to run away.
From far off, now, I hear your bell,
And as the sound begins to swell
I smile, and rest my weary eyes
While whispering my last goodbyes,
But taking comfort in the sound
As the twilight falls around.
